Recently, Kirwin from Graceful Creative, an excellent personal growth blog I regularly read and very much enjoy put forward a challenge that had previously been given to her by Shannon at The Daily Balance. It’s a great idea and has resulted in connection between like minded bloggers, very interesting perspectives and a lot of courage (often needed when opening up to the world). The mission (if you chose to accept it) was to be interviewed about who you are. Not one to pass up a challenge, I donned my orange bikini, 5 inch stilettos and pocket sized pistol, Bond girl style and accepted the mission.
Other brave compadres who also accepted the mission were Chania Girl from My Pursuit of Happiness, Positively Present and Denise at This is My Life. Check out their interviews here, here and here and Kirwin’s from Graceful Creative here. You can see my interview, well, here…
Who are you? Outside of being a partner/daughter/entrepreneur, who are you?
I’m many things like a dog lover, writer, outdoors enthusiast, nature lover, sister, health fanatic, traveller, environmentalist, adventurer etc, etc but as far as the essence of who I am, I’d say spirit (ie a “spiritual being having a human experience”).
How do you nourish yourself? What things do you do (big and small) that tell yourself that you are worth it?
Number 1 on the list; head to the beach. Nothing soothes the soul like sand between your toes, the sound of the waves in your ears and the fresh sea breeze on your face. I’m also partial to a glass of vino and a good (preferably inspirational) movie. When I complete #35 (Go to an Outdoor Movie) on my Daisy List, I may just be able to combine the 2! Now that would be sweet.
Travelling and trying new things also nourishes me. I’ll give anything a go once which explains why I can say I’ve eaten the Australian Aboriginal delicacy of witchetty grubs. Yes, they are a grub and no, they don’t taste like peanut butter. They taste more like what you’d think a grub would taste like; shit!
If you had a whole day to spend as you pleased, how would you spend it? (not hour by hour, but in general)
Organic breakfast at a cozy cafe, swim at the beach, read or write something, watch a movie, then a BBQ dinner with friends and/or family in our outdoor area overlooking the trees and finally, pack for a trip we’re leaving on the following day.
I know you have a Daisy List, but what are the top three things you’d like to do/see/accomplish before you die?
This is a tough one. OK, in no particular order;
1. Publish a book. I already have the title; “Divorce, Everyone Should Do It”. Now I just have the minor detail of writing the rest. ![]()
2. Give each of those close to me a major, and I’m talking major, surprise of some sort (eg dream car, dream house, dream experience).
3. Toss up between an African Safari (really want to see lions in the wild) or going to the Gallipoli ANZAC Day dawn service in Turkey or meet Oprah (I just love that woman). In case you hadn’t noticed, this was my way of extending the list to 6. Sneaky I know.
When do you feel cherished?
I feel cherished every day by my partner Chris, my family and my close friends. I am only too aware of how lucky I am.
If you were to choose 5 physical artifacts that represent who you are, what would you choose? (they can be jewelry, photos, books, clothing, food products, found objects,…anything physical)
Book: I’m a reader, a student, a writer, an imaginationer and a word maker uperer.
Window: I’m transparent, a terrible liar and less than adept at hiding my emotions (which can be a good and bad thing). What you see is what you get.
Security alarm: I do tend to make a fair bit of noise defending what and who is important to me.
Disco ball: I love a laugh, to have fun and see others do the same. Don’t tell anyone but I’m also partial to glam rock.
Passionfruit: Sometimes sweet, occasionally sour, but mostly sweet.
Thanks for the questions Kirwin! Anyone else interested in being interviewed? If so, let me know in the comments.

So glad to “meet” you finally:) I found you about the time your internet zonked out, so it’s great to have you back!
Loved reading this, Sami. Your ideal day sounds … well, ideal. And the glam rock?! Girl, move on over – I am so there with you. Rock on! Maybe we can chat about it together one day on Oprah’s couch …
Thank you for sharing this. Your way with words and your word making-upping are two of the biggest reasons I keep popping by. That and I’m just curious to see what you get up to each day. You’ve definitely got a fan:)
Hey Chania Girl,
Thanks so much for stopping by and for your lovely comment – much appreciated. Yeah, it’s great to have the site back up. I’m still re-inserting all my pics but apart from that, it’s all restored.
Lol re the glam rock! It’s a date. All we have to do now is see when Oprah is free!
This is a great post! It really makes you sit back, take stock and think about who you are… Great questions and answers – thanks for always being so willing to share stuff about yourself!
I loved reading this! (I’ll go add your link, once I’m done here.)
From experience, I can say that seeing animals in the wild (lion, elephant, hyena, zebra,…) is VERY COOL, indeed. I am, afterall, a South African girl who has spent many days at the Kruger Park. I could never, ever get enough of it. I would love to take my kids one day.
I still want to make my own Daisy List…need to get to that!
Hi Sami:
You sound like a really interesting person. I really enjoyed hearing the great advice your dad gave you while going through the “D.” So true. I feel fortunate that my dad has given me great nuggets of wisdom over the years. As someone who has worked in marketing and has gotten sacked three times in five years, I can identify with his comment about marketing. I, too, feel like I am “in the middle” or in transition.
Anyhow, I enjoy your blog.
Hi Tim,
Thanks very much. Dad does have great wisdom, actually both my parents do. I’m very lucky to have them. Re the marketing, it sounds like perhaps it’s not your gig. If it was, you’d love it, be great at it and companies wouldn’t be letting you go. While I know for sure marketing isn’t my thing, it has still served me well. It’s given me skills I needed for other things and given me opportunities I wouldn’t otherwise have had. Having said that, I’m glad to be out of it and doing what I’m doing now. I am far more fulfilled and feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. Transitioning is tough but definitely worth it once you get to the other side. All I can say is be kind to yourself, breathe, identify and be grateful for the great things you have in your life already and just know it’ll all work out. It always does. Thanks so much for stopping by.
Thanks Kirwin. I really enjoyed this exercise so thanks for including me! I totally agree re the seeing animals in the wild thing. When we were living in Canada, occasionally we’d see a black bear or grizzly in the wild. When we did, it always took my breath away. Re the Daisy List, I’m actually working on a doc that helps with putting one together. I’ll be posting it soon. Hopefully that will help.
Hey Valeska,
Thanks for your feedback and you’re welcome. Yeah, it does make you take stock. I found the “ideal day” question interesting. I was thinking about it and discovered that I actually do one of the parts of my ideal day pretty much every day but I don’t often have them all in the one day. Not such a bad thing though. It shows I’m doing something I love every day. I no complain!
I really enjoyed reading your interview. I did the same one (posted on my site under “who am i? who are you?”) and I thought it was a lot of fun! I’m glad I came across your site. It’s very positive (and orange — which is my favorite!). I look forward to reading more posts!
Hey Positively Present,
Thanks! I stopped by your site and read your answers to the interview questions. It was very interesting learning more about fellow bloggers and everyone’s different perspectives.
Thanks for your feedback. I love the orange too. It was originally black but I had it changed to orange – suits the site much better me thinks.
Hi Sami,
I loved this – so fun to learn more about you (even if you did break the rules!). And I love the word “word maker uperer”!! And being a spirit – my favorite answer of all here. Very cool!
Hi Lance,
Haha! I couldn’t help myself. Rules schmules I say! Thanks for your comment.
