Here’s the thing. I am an animal lover. I am such a fan that I don’t even like to walk on ants, but I have to say, I’m just about ready to dissect, without anaesthetic, with, say, a meat cleaver, a couple of whip birds that for the last week have taken up residence in a tree outside our bedroom window and woken us up at sparrow’s fart (no pun intended, ok, maybe a little bit intended) every day with their incessant whip type calling. Even through a closed window, they are so loud they might as well be in the room with us.

Recently they have taken to throwing themselves at the window in a crazed, rather extremist way. It’s one thing to be woken by a high pitched squealing alarm. It’s quite another to be woken by a high pitched squealing bird throwing itself for all its worth at your window. It’s kind of like a tornado warning siren followed by someone throwing, with force, a small bag of sand and marbles.

I have taken to decorating the tree outside our window with tin foil to scare them away. Ingenious I know. It feels like Christmas, although I’m fairly sure the neighbours think that a slightly demented, reclusive woman with 49 cats has moved in and started erecting tin foil force fields to keep the aliens away. My experiment is yet to prove itself but I’m hopeful.

In any case, I decided to do a bit of research on the little buggers and found out that the initial long “whip” sound is the male calling and the short high-pitched call at the end is the female answering. How romantic…if you’re not trying to sleep! Apparently they are very shy creatures and are rarely seen or photographed. Right. Shy and rarely seen. Well what freaking bird obsessed, Discovery Channel watching, 49 cat owning researcher came up with that gem of a bogus statement. Here’s my proof;

Well I suppose the positive I can take from this is that I’ve learnt something new and if the tin foil doesn’t keep the whip birds away, at least we’re safe from aliens!

    Walter Lantz had a similar problem with a mischievous wood pecker so he monetized it and made the Woody Wood Pecker cartoons. You may be too young to remember them though.

    My neighbors had a problem with birds crapping all over their wood deck so they got a concrete cat and put it on the hand rail, problem solved.

    This is a little off subject but on your list #89 Save your money. If psychics knew it all how come you never hear of any of them hitting the lottery?

    Take care Sami, and keep on blogging

    Hey Christopher,

    Great to see you back. I do remember Woody Woodpecker but I didn’t realise he was based on a real woodpecker! Hmm, Willy Whip Bird has a nice ring to it!! ;) Love the idea of the concrete cat – very lateral thinking.

    Might have to ask the psychic that when I see them!!

    Take it easy.
