Starfish

Having just returned home to Australia from living for a couple of years in Canada, Chris and I felt it fitting to see 2009 in on a beach. In fact, it couldn’t have been more opposite to the last new years we had in Canada if we’d thought, “What could we do that’s more opposite to the last new years we had in Canada?”

1 January, 2008: spent the day skiing in about -20 degrees temperature

1 January, 2009: spent the day on the beach, damning rum in about +30 degrees

BlueyWe’ve recently bought a red 99 Nissan Pathfinder called Bluey 2 (Bluey 1 was a red Ford Explorer from the 17th Century we had in Canada that we’d rather forget about) and a trip to one of Australia’s biggest sand islands, Moreton Island was a chance to test its 4 wheel driving capabilities. It was also a chance to hang out with good pals Rod and Kiles who we met there.

A 45 minute car ferry ride over to the island and we’re met by Rodders madly waving and taking photos of us coming off the barge. Really, the paparazzi can be so Coming out on to the beachtiresome. Have they nothing better to do? We followed them to our lavish and rather spacious campsite right on the water on the surfside (ie eastern side) of the island. Ah, the serenity.

7 days of sun, sand, surf and Bundy Rums. It doesn’t get any better. In fact, half way through the week we were having such a great time I commented to Kiles that the only thing that could have made the trip better was to see some dolphins just out from our campsite. Sure enough, not 2 hours later, even they obliged. Ask and ye shall receive.

Also on the agenda were drives to the Northpoint Lighthouse, beautiful Honeymoon Bay, Blue Lagoon which is more like a giant freshwater lake than a lagoon and Bulwer for the obligatory supplies like water and ice-creams.

The adventure didn’t end there – watch this space for the next exciting instalment of Living the Dream: New Years at Moreton Island (Part 2)…
