This week’s kick arse question is taken from the book “If², 500 Questions for the Game of Life“ by Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell;

If you had to name a smell that always makes you feel nostalgic, what would it be?
I’d say Lemon-scented Gum tree leaves.
I was lucky enough to live on a farm for the majority of my childhood. Being rural Australia, Eucalypt trees were not hard to come by, but my favourite of all Eucalypts is the Lemon-scented Gum.
As a kid, I’d pluck the leaves off low hanging branches as I rode by on Goldie, my beloved, inordinately hairy and overly plump pony. Then I’d crush them up so as to get the full force of the lemon eucalypt aroma.
That scent still takes me back to the days on the farm. Incidentally, I’m partial to the smell of horses too but that’s another story.
How about you? What smell takes you back?

You may think it’s awkward but the smell of nicotine brings me back to those nostalgic moments when my father was still living. He’s been a heavy smoker and I can smell it in his hands every time he strokes my head with loving gentleness.
Easy one.
Horses.
My favorite perfume.
What a cool question. I look forward to reading other responses!
Thanks for the prompt to recall some great childhood memories…
This is an easy one for me too – the smell of the bush & rolling fields on a hot summer’s day does it for me. I spent the happiest years of my childhood growing up in a very small community in the middle of nowhere exploring the surrounding countryside & building treehuts in the tallest trees in the world (or so they seemed to a small boy).
Good friends, adventure filled days, zero crime & 10 cent movies at the town hall on Friday nights.
Those were the days…
I would have to say, growing up in southeast U.S., it would be the sweet smell of honeysuckle. It’s pretty much everywhere you go in the south.
By the way I recently found this site and have really enjoyed reading the posts. Still playing catch-up reading previous posts.
The smell of grape pop tarts. For some reasons I think of reading on a rainy day when I was young. It also brings back the song Love Is Blue, an instrumental. Must have been playing in the background.
@Houston
Thanks for stopping by Houston! Great to have you here.
@Chick J
Hey Chick J. Just goes to show the power of smell eh? It really can remind us of certain memories, times and events.
Play-doh. And crayons. The smells of childhood that still make me feel good. (And creative.)
@Jason
Thanks for stopping by.
Hey Jason! Oh yeah, the smell of Play-doh totally takes me back to my childhood. Mum used to have her own Play-doh recipe and we’d get to choose what colour it’d be each time. Only problem was, us kids were prone to consuming some of it (it was VERY salty). I can only imagine what came out the other end!
