2009 is the year I’m determined to achieve supreme health and fitness. Holy crap, now that I’ve put it out there in this blog, I’m really going to have to do it. Damn you to hell Life, Laughs & Lemmings, damn you!

You’ll see from my Daisy List # 42. Spend 3 months getting my body in shape that I am in fact wanting to spend 3 months getting my body in shape. Now they tell me an important part of health and fitness is what you eat and apparently carrot cake doesn’t figure prominently in the healthy eating pyramid. Damn you to hell healthy eating pyramid, damn you! My food intake is actually pretty good apart from my obsession with all that is cake, especially carrot cake. Who would have thought that cake and carrots would be such a beautiful marriage. Makes me weep just thinking about it. Anyway, I digress.

In the name of great health and helping our planet, we’ve decided to go organic. Now this proved to be more of a challenge than you would think. First of all you have to find a place that actually sells organic produce, then you have to negotiate the sneaky disguises the marketing geniuses come up with (“natural” doesn’t necessarily mean organic and just because a packet is green and has a smiling grandma on it doesn’t mean it isn’t full of nuclear waste), then you have to take out a second mortgage to pay for it all.

Chris went a lovely shade of egg shell when the friendly cashier told him what the 4 bags worth of organic food items cost, and when asked, “will that be credit?”. His reply was, “Yes, most definitely.” Only a drug runner and Paris Hilton would walk around with the cash required to pay for that lot.

The fridge is far less full than if we’d paid the same amount for a non-organic shop, but it does feel great to be eating food that is chemical-free. My feeling is that if you shouldn’t put it in your eye, then why would you consume or absorb it. I don’t know what sodium monofluorophosphate is but I can tell you right now, I’m not that keen to put it in my eye and yet this is found in the non-organic toothpaste I currently use. There are plenty of other reasons why going organic is a very good thing. Check out this interesting article on Why Eat Organic – Does It Really Make A Difference? from The Healthy Eating Site.

Whilst more research is needed to see how we can eat organically for less than a second mortgage, the real proof will be in the pudding (or rather the organic, flax seed infused, soy based, vitamin B enriched, protein slice)…will I feel and function better as I gradually eliminate the chemicals I consume and absorb? Time will tell. I’ll keep you posted.

Do you eat organic food and if so, have you noticed a difference in your health?
