The end of the week question taken from the book If², 500 Questions for the Game of Life by Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell;
If you had to name a song whose lyrics best captured an experience you had, which would it be?
The first song that came to mind for me was ”The Only One You’ve Got” by 3 Doors Down. I first heard this when I was living in Banff, Canada about a year ago (every time I hear it now it reminds me of then).
The lyrics that really “struck a chord” were; Your mistakes do not define you now, they tell you who you’re not. You’ve got to live this life you’re given like it’s the only one you’ve got.
At the time I was healing from the D word (starts with d and ends in schmivorce) and living my Dad’s advice of “the best revenge is to live well”. I was learning to have courage, to live well and to not let the D word define who I was. This song really represents that time well. Here’s 3 Doors Down performing “The Only One You’ve Got”…
If you want to buy a copy of the song (for an earth shattering US$0.99), click here; The Only One You’ve Got.
Which song best represents an experience you’ve had?

What a coincidence, that song and those specific lyrics are my girlfriend’s favorite from the 3 Doors Down albums. If you fancy checking out another band that is similar to Three Doors Down. Check out Ra at http://www.ra-band.net/. They are one of my favorite bands. If you sign up for FREE on their website you can download their live album for free. They too have some inspiring and memorable lyrics, for me anyway
And who’s going to turn down a FREE album to download
Sorry if this is classed as SPAM, but they are a band that not a lot of people know about and if you like Three Doors Down, im sure you’ll like Ra
Hey MartYn,
Thanks for the link. Will definitely check Ra out. Cool name for a band btw. Not classed as SPAM at all – always up for listening to new tunes and yep, more than happy to get a free album thrown in! Thanks again.
Great lyrics! I’ve never heard that song before, but it sounds like I would like it. I think almost every song I hear resonates with me in some way and reminds me of a person, place, or time in my life. One song that’s really working for me now is Vanessa Carlton’s “Nolita Fairytale.” The lyrics that really get me right now are: “I walk the streets with a song in my head/We ebb and we flow so/Got my toes and my pup at the foot of the bed/The heart always seems to know/Take the glitz back/I want the soul instead/’Cause I’ve found some kinda fairytale.” It’s a really great song and that stanza really hits home with me because I really think I’m getting to a point where I understand the need for happiness and contentment in my life. I recently did an interview at The Sassy Minx that lists a bunch of great songs and lyrics. You might want to check it out!
As I read your post, Bridge Over Troubled Water came to mind. Not sure why, although I’ve always really liked the song, but there’s got to be some memory trying to crash its way into my conscious. I hope it doesn’t happen at 3am.
Hi Positively Present,
I’ll have to check out “Nolita Fairytale” (love those lyrics) and The Sassy Minx (v cool name for a blog). Thanks for that.
When I hear a particular song a few times I tend to stop and really listen to the lyrics because often there’ll be some sort of meaning that relates to something going on in my life at that time. It’s cool when that happens. Btw, I don’t think you’re getting to the point where you understand the need for happiness and contentment, you’re already there girl! Thanks for your comment PP.
Hey Laurie,
Maybe you should take a look at the lyrics for Bridge Over Troubled Water and see if there’s any meaning there. Could be an interesting exercise. If you do, come back and let us know if anything came up for you (it may stop the 3am crash too!!).
When I was younger(much younger) Solitary Man by Neil Diamond was singing how I felt.
Now it is “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John or “A Touch of Grey” by the Grateful Dead.
Hi Chick J,
It seems the songs change as we do. Not surprising really. Wonder what the next song will be.
Great question! 99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall?
No!!! (Jannie!)
“I’m Walking On Sunshine.”
@Jannie
Hahahahahaha! That’s funny. I like it. Pity there wasn’t a song “99 Glasses of Rum On the Wall”.
