3 of the dozen

Roses aren’t my favourite flowers, gerberas are, but I’ve always loved the idea of giving someone the classic, cliched and done to death in the movies, dozen red roses.

There’s a reason it’s classic, cliched and done to death in the movies, most people love being on the receiving end of them. And there’s no denying, roses en masse are pretty spectacular.

Roses

When thinking about surprising someone with a dozen red roses, I had a few criteria;

  1. The receiver of said dozen red roses had to be someone special.
  2. The said dozen red roses had to be given out of the blue, as a surprise and for no particular reason.
  3. Said dozen red roses said they’d rather be delivered in person.

So I chose Mum as the recipient and made up a fakey reason to drop around to their place to deliver the surprise.

Now I understand red roses are supposed to signify romance, passion and love. Let’s just be clear that 2 out of the 3 most certainly didn’t apply here. I figured 1 out of 3 ain’t bad. Besides, surprising someone with a dozen peach roses just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Mum was suitably surprised and when asked what they were for, I suitably replied, “Because it’s number 98 on my Daisy List.” Quickly followed by, “And because you’re the best Mum ever.” [insert receipt of major brownie points]…

 Mum

Oh, and Chris, if you’re reading this, as classic, cliched and done to death in the movies a dozen red roses is, I’d prefer gerberas. Bright pink ones. And none of the green crap, just the gerberas. And a bow would be nice. Just so you know. [you can then insert major brownie points].

    How nice! Was that before or after Nelson accidently called their home phone?! lol. Sorry! :S

    I surprised Nelson on Valentines Day once. It was before our first date, so for shits-and-giggles I sent him one long-stemmed rose, which they deliver in one of those clear cylinder tubes with the hideous and cliched teddy, bows and red ribbons – the whole box and dice! Considering he works in the blokey-bloke world of trucks, he was suitably embarrassed :D Mission accomplished!!

    Rose-Girl Sami,
    What a sweet gift for you Mum! I’m sure it made her day! Super-hero status, I’m telling you, just keeps growing (I mean that very much!)…

    What a wonderful idea! I’ve sent my mom flowers before and she LOVED them. It’s always so great when it’s a surprise!

    Okay, for various reasons, I’m all teary eyed right now. One, and to get it out of the way quickly, I just miss my own Mom so much. There, that’s out of my system.

    You’re a gem, Sami. Your Mum will remember this moment all her life as one of her top ten days ever.

    Hugs for your Mum’s super-cool daughter!

    Good on you Sami!!! I bet she loves them… even though I grew up on a flower farm (where ironically my parents grow gerberas!) I never tire at looking at flowers.

    Every now and then I buy myself a bunch from the markets and just admire how perfect they are.

    Have a great week knowing your someone special really appreciated your kind and loving gesture.

    K

    Funnily enough it was just before Nelson rang…twice. :)
    I would have paid good money to see the look on his face when a single rose with all it accompaniments turned up to his land of the trucks workplace. That would have been too funny!

    @Lance
    Hey Lance. Aww, thank you. Not sure about super-hero status, although, I’m not adverse to wearing undies on the outside of my tights! ;) Thanks Lance, you rock!

    Hey PP. Yeah, I knew how much Mum loves flowers too so apart from the fact that she’s the greatest Mum ever, I chose her as the recipient because I knew she’d appreciate them.

    Hey Gayze, your comment totally made me glad I gave my Mum those flowers. A massive reminder to not take her for granted. I’m sending you a bunch of cyber flowers (check your email) to put a smile back on your face. Only, I’ll send gerberas instead of roses because you can’t help but feel good when you see a bunch of those. Hugs right back at you.

    Hey K. How funny you grew up on a gerbera farm! That’s my idea of flower paradise.
    I love how you buy yourself flowers. I’m a big believer in getting your own flowers if you want them so have done that myself before.
    Thanks, you have a great week too!

    I have been on the receiving end…and have done this surprising bit before. But off late haven’t had the chance…I think this is going to be a wonderful reminder.
    I’m already planning in my head as to who when were how the said roses are going to surprise :) Mum is at the top of my list too :)

    Lots of love
    Zeenat.

    Oh wow, Sami, that’s so awesome! You’re the best daughter, ever!

    You’re inspiring, Sami. This is such a great idea. My Mom would love random flowers like this, for no special reason other than being thankful.

    Even though sometimes flowers can appear cliche, I just LOVE THEM! My man randomly bought me bird of paradise/ginger/teeny orchids and had them sent from Hawaii a few weeks ago. Just to cheer me up. Geez, how did I find this guy???

    You’re such a flower, yourself, Sami. I’m so lucky I met you!!!

    @Wendy
    Thanks Wendy. Yeah, I love giving so it was important for me to include those sort of goals and dreams on my Daisy List. There’s nothing better than the look on someone’s face when you surprise them with a gift or gesture of some sort.
    And YES, I very much miss the snow in Canada. When it sparkles under sunlight it’s magic.

    @Zeenat
    Thanks Zeenat! Cool! You totally should surprise someone. You’ll find it’s just as much fun for you as it is for the person receiving them.
    Ten four re the ROAKA post, I’ll drop you an email. Can’t wait to see what you got up to! xxx

    @Lori
    Thanks Lori! You know, after everything my parents have done for me, a bunch of flowers doesn’t really cut it but it’s a start!
    Seriously, your guy is one of a kind. What a sweetie he is. You must have found him in the same place I found Chris. ;)
    Right back at you girl! JBN feels like my second home. So grateful to have met you too. Keep smiling. xxx
