Lately I’ve been ticking a few of the smaller goals off my Daisy List, one of which I alluded to in my last Random Acts of Kick Arse post – this…

Cupcake stack

Isn’t she a work of art?

Cupcakes, for me, are like the holy grail. Such is my love for those sweet, little morsels of cakeness, I’d travel across rugged lands, vast seas, hot coals and broken glass to get to one.

I am yet to meet a cupcake I didn’t lovingly gaze at, taking note of the undulating contours of the icing, the luscious, sugared aroma and the glint of the kaleidoscopic array of sprinklins…before stuffing the little bugger into my mouth and devouring it without mercy.

By the way, for a cupcake to be top of its game, in my opinion, the following is required;

  • Colour – the gaudier, the better. Yes, fluorescent green included.
  • Icing – cream? Pfft! Cream is for nancies. It has to be icing.
  • Sprinklins – translation: the colourful stuff you sprinkle on top. You can never have enough colour on a cupcake. Sprinklins are the cake equivalent of glitter and I have an unhealthy obsession with glitter, meaning I have an unhealthy obsession with sprinklins.

Ahhhhh cupcakes, how I love thee.

Given my obvious rapture for these wee little baked delights, it makes complete sense that the construction of a cupcake stack should make it to my Daisy List.

There was only one problem, I can’t bake for shit. Enter stage left…MUM (and her recipe book and her baking utensils and her kitchen)!

Cooking cup cakes with Mum

And Assistant Cupcake Decorator, my sister, Shrimp…

Icing the cupcakes

Let the cupcake stack construction begin!

Bloody little cutie cupcake thingys patiently waiting for the batter…

Cupcake trays

At this point, I’d already consumed enough cake batter to last a lifetime…

Cupcake batter ready to go

A picture of concentration…

Spooning out the batter

Evidently I hadn’t eaten enough cake batter…

Licking the bowl

Houston, we have lift off!

The before shot

The all important task of sprinklin sprinkling…

Sprinklins

The obligatory arty farty shot…

Sprinklin mess

At this point, I nearly lost my mind. So many cupcakes, so little time [to mercilessly devour them]…

The after shot

At this point, I HAD lost my mind…

Cupcake goggles

And who was the exceedingly lucky recipient of the cupcake stack? My exceedingly lucky partner, Chris…

Chris about to mercilessly devour a cupcake

Cupcake: “Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Lord have mercy oh merciless one!”

Cupcake murder

I’m pretty sure Chris said he’d not seen anything so stunning nor had tasted anything so delectable in all of his existence and that he was so overcome by the grandeur of this experience he felt a little giddy. Yep, I’m pretty sure he said that. I’m also pretty sure I ate about 8 of those suckers and have the spare tyre around my midriff to prove it.

Daisy List #55. Make a Cupcake Stack for Someone’s Birthday – done!

PS. A shout out to Kirsty from Hamperific for emailing me a link to this site for inspiration; Bakerella, where you’ll find some seriously amazing cakes. Maybe I should give the Cake Pops a go next. Hey Mum, what are you doing next Wednesday?

PPS. Thanks Mum and Shrimp. You guys rock!

Had any cake experiences? What’s the grandest cake you’ve received? Do you love cupcakes (there is only one right answer to this question – just so you know)?

    Uh ohh…I’m going to be a poopy pants – I actually lost my sweet tooth about a decade ago. Why is that? I’m a sucker for anything salty – but can’t handle anything sweet.

    That said, look at these beauties! Wow, how colorful! What a great photo-documentary post, Sami! They’re beautiful! And how cool to have help – it looks like you all were having a lot of fun that day.

    Let’s see…my cake experiences? Well, I do love a nice, tart cheesecake. But, nothing really stands out just this moment. I’ll have to think about that one.

    Thanks for sharing, Sami, and congrats for knocking off #55!
    Cheers!

    LOVE cupcakes!! I want to eat all of those right now!!

  3. Kirsty said:

    Hey Sami! They look great! And tasty too…

    Yep, gotta love the ol’ cupcake. My friend Clare owns a business called Cupcake Caboodle and I should have included her link too. She did my birthday ones in Western theme and man can she bake.

    You know what I really want to try? Chocolate Chilli cupcakes.. when I find a recipe I will email it.

    So glad that your partner provided plenty of good, well deserved feedback – sounds like he really appreciates a darn good cupcake!

    Hey Cupcake Artist,
    My favorite: the pink one growing grass on it (upper left). Is that really grass???!???! We cut our grass here, but we don’t eat it. (if you need some more, just let me know…I send it over) Cupcake Mountain rocks!!

    Me? I have a preference for my mom’s chocolate cherry cake…

    (and I ALWAYS love a cupcake…they’re so small…it’s like you’re eating nothing, right? Right!!!)

    @Lori
    Hey Lori. That’s insane! No sweet tooth? How is this possible and can I get me some of that action? If I didn’t have a major sweet tooth, I wouldn’t have the spare tyre!
    My partner Chris is with you on the cheesecake. That and panna cotta are his favourites, although he doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth either. Doesn’t matter though, because I’m always happy to help him out with the cake eating!
    Thanks Lori! xxx

    @Positively Present
    Unfortunately PP, it’s too late, hence the spare tyre. You know I would have sent you one otherwise! ;)

  7. Sami said:

    @Kirsty
    Thanks Kirsty. The stack had a slight lean going on but nonetheless, the cupcakes were divine.
    Chocolate Chilli cupcakes eh? Now they sound interesting. So long as there’s icing and sprinklins, I’ll give them a go!
    Hee hee, yep, my his feedback was very well received! ;)

    @Lance
    Lance, Lance, it is not grass but grass coloured coconut. Do you know nothing of the cupcake world? Although, I love cupcakes so much, I’d STILL eat them growing grass or not (so long as there was icing involved).
    And yes, cupcakes are so small they most definitely are like eating nothing. Doesn’t explain the spare tyre though. Oh yeah, that’s right, it could have something to do with the fact that I ate EIGHT OF THEM! :)

  9. Valeska said:

    Yay for doing another thing on the list! And what a stack, looks great – lucky Chris. Can’t say that I have made a cupcake stack, but like you I am slightly partial to a cupcake or four. A couple of years ago I got together with 3 friends and 2 awesome cupcake books. We made about 200 of the suckers, both sweet and savoury – delicious. It was such a fun day and I think everyone in our families and workplaces loved us for it as well. I agree, can never have too many sprinkles and icing (well, perhaps not on the savoury ones…but then again…).

    I could dive right in!

    The stack looks great and I can taste it with my eyes.

  11. Lance said:

    Shoot…it wasn’t grass?!?!? I guess I’m only just a cupcake novice. How do I get over that Sami? Eat more cupcakes? Make more cupcakes? Maybe you could do an online course in cupcake artistry!! We’d lose the taste, though, wouldn’t we…distance learning isn’t the same as distance sampling!!

  12. Jeanne said:

    Holy Cow, Sami — it appears cupcakes are for you what ice cream is for me. And the best of both worlds would be several cupcakes in a bowl, surrounded by ice cream!

    I’ve always wondered how much ice cream I’d have to eat in one sitting to get sick of it and not want it anymore, but I haven’t crossed that bridge yet. Hey, we could have a contest: cupcake and ice cream eating until one of us cries UNCLE! Hmmm: perhaps a new fantasy for me . . . :)

  13. Sami said:

    @Valeska
    Hey Vee, yeah, I’ve ticked a few off lately and am still working on the Variety Bash (right in the middle of calling around companies for sponsorships).
    200 CUPCAKES!!!! Now THAT’S a serious amount of cupcakes that, for me, would have resulted in a seriously large spare tyre! That’s a cupcake marathon. I tell you what, I’m keen to give those Cake Pops a go – they look too cute.

  14. Sami said:

    @J.D.
    Haha! I wouldn’t have minded rolling around in them myself. Would have meant a slightly different looking cupcake stack though. More like a cupcake flat!

  15. Sami said:

    @Lance
    Lol. I’m pretty sure an online course in cupcakes by someone who can’t bake to save themselves could have potential credibility issues. About the only one who’d sign up would be me! And maybe you, seeing as you’re a cupcake novice. :)

  16. Sami said:

    @Jeanne
    Hey there Jeanne! Ice cream eh? As bizarre as this may seem from someone who has a serious case of sweet-tooth, I’m not a huge fan of ice cream. I don’t hate it, but I’d definitely go for cake or chocolate before I’d go for ice cream. How about I take the several cupcakes and you take the ice cream? Deal?
    As for a cupcake and ice cream eating contest, I’M IN!!! Now, there’s just the small issue of the Pacific Ocean that is between us! ;)

    Yum!! ::wipes drool off keyboard::

    They look delicious! Great job!

  18. Sami said:

    @Gayze
    Oh no! Drool and keyboard don’t mix (unlike cupcakes and icing)! Thanks Gayze.

    Haha… beautiful cupcakes, great teamwork.
    You brighten up my day.

    OMG… this looks glorious! The whole thing… the baking, the decorating, the stacking and, most importantly, the shameless consuming of awesome cupcakes.

    I <3 Desserts. I live for them.

    After reading Lori’s comment above, I may, in fact, need to disown her as a friend. I’m not sure I can fully trust someone who can look at a stack of cupcakes and admit she has no sweet tooth. WTF?!?!? What kind of person doesn’t love a stack of cupcakes? I bet she hates kittens and puppies, too! ;)

    I’m seriously considering moving closer to you so that I can get one of these on MY birthday!

    And the artsy fartsy shot? Stunning and Whimsical. :)

  21. Lisis said:

    PS: I don’t discriminate… I love cake AND ice cream. I’m an equal opportunity devourer.

  22. Sami said:

    @Akemi
    Thanks Akemi! :)

  23. Sami said:

    @Lisis
    Hey Lisis. I know what you mean. I was highly suspicious of Chris when he revealed he doesn’t really dig sweet stuff. WTF? was my exact reaction too. All was forgiven though when I realised it meant much more cake for me!
    If you ever come visit, I’ll be sure to re-create the great cupcake stack as a welcome to Aus gift. How’s that sound?
    Oh, and I can’t take credit for the artsy fartsy shot, that was Shrimp’s idea. Creative little cupcake she is!

  24. Jason of Kim & Jason said:

    Nice cupcakes. The cool thing about cupcakes is that you somehow feel like you’re being much more healthy as opposed to a whole piece of cake. Which means you can have two…and then before you know it, the whole dang plate is gone.

    Which then reminds me of how my wife eats brownies. She cuts about a one-inch wide slice at a time — just a bite — and slowly eats row after row. She’s been known to eat half the pan in one sitting, eating them one inch at a time. Dangerous.

  25. Sami said:

    @Jason
    Hey Jason. Great to see you here again. Oh yeah, very familiar with the “whole dang plate” thing. Damn little scruptious treats they are, you can’t stop at just one!
    Haha! I’ve been known to make my way through row after row of chocolate. If those brownies had icing, it’d be sianara to them too!
