It’s been almost a year to the day I launched Life, Laughs & Lemmings (geez time flies when you’re busy ticking things off your Daisy List!).

For those of you who’ve been around here for a while, you may remember a point where I came to a crossroads with the direction of this blog. Then, after some soul searching, head banging a brick wall and alcohol, I embarked on my world domination of the blogosphere with the intention of turning this blog into a business.

Well, about the only thing I dominated was the waves at Manly Beach and even that required a giant, Big Bird yellow, floatation device surfboard!

Whilst I enjoyed the writing and loved ticking things off my Daisy List, I’m not altogether interested in the monetizing aspect blogging. Monetizing is kinda important if you want to create a business.

So, it seems I am back at a crossroads. On top of this is another D word. What is it with me and D words? I’m beginning to form an involuntary twitch whenever I hear a word beginning with the letter D. This particular word starts with D and rhymes with schmepression.

Yep, it’s true, me, Sami, Daisy List extraordinaire, Lordess of Lemmings and Messiah to Aliens was recently diagnosed with mild to moderate depression.

“How is that possible?” I hear you ask, “This site is hardly depressive.” Well, I thought it was just moodiness and so would only write when I felt “up”. Truth is, until I started treatment, I didn’t realise just how down I was.

As with D word 1, I am completely grateful for D word 2 for a couple of reasons;

I now feel awesome (you thought my previous Flashdance was crazy, you should see my turbo charged, Zoloft fueled version now!).

It was a huge relief to know there was a reason I’d feel less than stellar on occasions, and it wasn’t just because I wasn’t trying hard enough to stay positive (for those who don’t know, depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain).

I have previously mentioned how I am yet to finish the last bit of healing from D word 1 (essentially the forgiveness part), well, the therapy I’ve done to counter D word 2 has also resulted in dealing with the last part of D word 1. I can now put my hand on my heart and say, I have forgiven. I really have.

I now have levels of motivation, energy and hopefulness that makes Richard Simmons look lethargic.

Having said all that, I am still in a recovery phase and one of the tasks I’ve been set is to reduce the number of projects on my plate. It is with this in mind I have decided to take a break from the blogosphere (both posting on this blog and commenting on others).

I am not necessarily walking away for good. At this point it is a hiatus for an undetermined amount of time. I may be back, I may not, either way I’ll be letting you know when I decide for sure.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for stopping by here, commenting, subscribing, linking and generally showing your support. You are a phenomenal lot and I know I’ll miss interacting with you. The community around this blog is something else.

So, it’s not technically a good bye, it’s more like a “see ya later”!

Oh yeah, and just so you know, I plan to continue my quest to tick everything off my Daisy List. You’ll know I’ve completed number 25 when you see me on Oprah (or in jail charged with stalking – “But your Honour, the lemmings made me do it! Or maybe it was the aliens.”).

Take it easy peeps.

Recently, Jeanne from Dream A Happy Life included little ole mwa in a list of her 10 favourite blogs. The ego in me said, “Woohoo! I made the list! I made the list! I made the list!” The other inordinately more pleasant, less raucaus and far more humble part of me was honoured.

If you haven’t already, you really should head on over to Dream A Happy Life and say hi to Jeanne. If you wish to be a wise, happy, peaceful individual living your dreams, you’ll find her an inspiration.

Part of Jeanne’s Ten Favourites post included a “passing the torch” element. She issued the challenge to those who made the list to name ten favourite things and ten favourite blogs. I like a challenge so here goes…

Ten Favourite Things

In no particular order;

Spending time with those close to me.

A BBQ at the beach with family.

Cuddling a puppy or patting a horse.

Laughing my arse off.

Trying something new.

A movie, blanket and glass of wine when it’s raining.

The smell of lemon scented eucalyptus leaves (and horses. Yep, horses).

Bear hugs.

The Canadian Rockies.

Good times with great friends.

It was seriously difficult to name just ten so here are my other ten favourite things…

Sunrises and sunsets.

Paddling in, looking at and floating in water.

Beach camping trips.

Traveling.

Giving

Live music.

Reading.

Carrot cake.

Inappropriate conversation and jokes around the dinner table.

Surprises (giving and receiving).

Ten Favourite Blogs

This wasn’t easy either but here they are, in no particular order…

Jane Be Nimble: Jane is actually Lori. Lori has a passion for staying nimble, both in mind and body. She is funny as hell, has a bent for science, needs treatment for an unhealthy level of love for lichen and likes to drop words like “sternocleidomastoid”, “panglossian” and “effulgence”. She’s one of a kind and has a Phar Lap sized heart.

Operation NICE: Melissa’s blog Operation NICE is all about spreading the niceness. Her belief is that kindness can change the world and her mission is to spread the concept of being nice. Nice stories, nice news, nice giveaways and nice assignments abound. A place I visit for a pick me up and shot of inspiration.

Jannie Funster: Jannie sings for beer and donuts. And this pretty much sums up her hilarious blog. She’s as funny as they come. Don’t drink your coffee while reading her posts or you might inadvertently snort it through your nose when you laugh out loud at her antics. Run by the ever efficient (even if he can’t spell) Blue Bunny Manigemints, Jannie Funster is a total crack up!

The Jungle of Life: Lance is a wise, caring, giving soul as evidenced by his blog, The Jungle of Life. The Jungle is where I find my weekly dose of insight, inspiration and thought provoking gems on this thing we call life. Lance could be considered the Dalai Lama of the West.

Joy Rebel: Brandi is a talented photographer. She’s also started a movement, or rather a rebellion. It’s a rebellion against negativity, mundaneness (I think I just made up another word) and fallacy. She suggests that instead, we find the beauty, spread the love and become joyful.

Positively Present: Dani has spent most of her life living with a negative attitude. In 2009 she decided to turn it around, and so was born Positively Present. Since then, she’s been on a mission to live positively and in the present moment. What she’s achieved in a short time is phenomenal and could be considered a poster child for changing those parts of yourself that aren’t working.

Quest for Balance: As the name of her blog suggests, Lisis is on a personal quest to find the balance between the things she needs to do and the things she wants to do. She’s a firecracker and has great wit, courage and huge generosity. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and tell it like it is. Dr Phil would be proud.

Happy Lotus: Nadia is all about spirit. Spirit in the spirited sense and spirit in the soul sense. Her musings on life, peacefulness, spirituality and happiness are thought provoking and deep but still fun and at times, funny. She oozes love at every turn.

Escape Adulthood: Jason and Kim have made it their life’s purpose to help us return to the “carefree days of childhood”. Adultitis is their foe and dreams, passion and playfulness their antidote. Escape Adulthood reminds me to have fun and not take life too seriously.

Dream A Happy Life!: And then there’s Jeanne. In Jeanne’s own words, she’s an “intrepid dreamer, sharing [her] thoughts and experiences about this happy life we all seek.” When she’s not traveling the countryside in her RV, she’s in the garden or imparting her wisdom. Jeanne is living the dream.

So there you have it, a few of my favourites. For those of you who made the list and whose ego just went a little berko (Aussie for berserk), feel free to pass the torch on.

Thanks Jeanne for including me in your list!!

An Ode to the Readers of Life, Laughs & Lemmings

What the hell happened to 2009?
It went faster than light now it’s Christmas time.
Presents and parties, rum balls and tinsel holly
A fat man, red suit and a whole lot of jolly.

May your Christmas be full of laughter and fun,
And pudding, mashed spuds and bottles of rum.
Adios 09 and hello twenty 10
Good times and much cheer to you my friends!

Have a great Christmas everyone. Oh, and I’ll be offline for a couple of weeks indulging in rum balls, rum without the balls and time with family and friends. I’ll see you in the new year!

Lisis from Quest for Balance recently opened a can of worms with her Net Worth vs Self Worth: The Passion Paradox post. The “can”, was busting open the myth of “following your passion and the money will follow” and the “worms” were countless comments, emails and response posts by readers and other bloggers. Note: I use the term “worms” in the nicest possible way of course.

Judging from the amazingly thoughtful responses, different perspectives and varied opinions, it was most definitely a hot topic, with many people weighing in on the passion vs profit debate.

In her post, Lisis says, “There is a current trend in society (at least in the States) that I find misleading and dangerous. You have probably seen more than a few people preaching The “Freedom” Gospel, encouraging others to leave their “boring” jobs with the assurance that financial success is a natural result of following your passion…

…The broken logic here is that passion and money are somehow intrinsically related. Just because you are passionate about petunias to the point of obsession does NOT mean you will make more money for it. You make more money when you focus on making money (business acumen), not when you focus on your passion for petunias. If you find a way to make lots of money while working with petunias, you are a clever business person… or really lucky.”

Lisis’ post and subsequent (excellent) response posts I read by Lori at Jane Be Nimble and David from Raptitude, really got me thinking. In fact, I thought so hard about it and analysed my situation to such an extent, it nearly did my head in! But here’s what I came up with…

Do I think you can make money from your passion? Yes.

Do I think that money will automatically come to you if your follow your passion? No.

Have I followed my passion (ie with this blog)? Yes, I believe so.

Has money followed? Not so far.

Is there potential for the money to follow? I’m not sure. Possibly, with a lot of work.

Is there a missing link here? Hmm.

In order to answer this question, I came up with a formula;

Passion + education + hard work + tenacity + providing value that people will pay for = fulfilling, meaningful career/purpose/business + money

When I looked at the formula, I realised that I have the passion. I have the education. I am not afraid of hard work. And I have tenacity. The part of the equation that’s unknown to me is whether this blog can be a vehicle to provide value that people will actually pay for.

In David’s response post, What Passion Will Buy You, he suggests passion alone is not enough to make a living. A practical mindset and finding a balance between passion and profit is what is required. In other words, passion combined with selling something that is of value to others such that they are willing to pay for it is how you can make a fulfilling living.

And that’s where you come in dear readers.

You see, I started this blog with a view to building it into a business, but I now wonder whether I’ve bought into the “follow your passion and the money will follow” myth. I’m not sure if I’m missing the crucial piece of the formula; offering something of value to others that they are willing to pay for.

How else can I find out but to ask youguys? Sooo, as valued readers of this blog, I’d really like your opinion. I’ve developed an easy 3 question survey that should take no more than a minute or so to complete. All answers are completely anonymous so you can go to town. I would very much appreciate your brutally honest feedback (I can take it!).

Click on this link for the survey: Am I Kidding Myself Survey

Thanks everyone!

Yes folks, I’m back! I’ve returned from my adventures in Hawaii a little browner, pudgier and poorer than I left. Saying it was a fun trip would be a gross understatement. I am likely however, to be in Mai Tai detox for the next 6 months.

Not surprisingly I have more than one story to impart, some life lessons learned, a major Daisy List goal ticked off and a comical experience with an out of control, bright blue, 3 wheel moped we affectionately called the Smurfette Mobile (let’s just say I am grateful to still be here to recount the story). Plenty of writing fodder for the next couple of weeks!

A HUGE thanks to the kick arse guest posters who kept the home fires stoked while I was away and to those who welcomed them in the comments. Muchly appreciated!

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering; no, we didn’t win the tennis tournament. Actually, we only marginally took out second last place out of about a dozen teams.

Apparently our shots were so random, our competitors didn’t know whether to expect a scorching winner or a shot over the fence onto the court next door (at least it was in, just slightly misdirected). We like to think of it as strategic play rather than ineptitude – consistently inconsistent if you will.

Oh well, had it been a Mai Tai drinking tournament, I would have been a shoe in.

In about 2 weeks’ time, Chris and I will be embarking on a trip to Hawaii for a wedding. No, not ours, Chris will require far more how-the-hell-do-I-handle-Sami training and many more sedatives before he takes that leap!

It’s the wedding of good friends, Tanya and Greg, whom we met whilst living in Banff, Canada and promptly fell in love with (in the friend way, not the swingers way).

Tanya is Australian and Greg is Canadian so Hawaii was chosen as a good half-way point for all concerned.

Quite a few of the guests will be good friends from our Banff days (the wedding has actually been dubbed the Banff Reunion) who we haven’t seen since we left almost 12 months ago. Ironically, we’ll be flying out the day before our 1 year anniversary of being home in Australia.

Given I’ll be immersed in catching up, moped tours, a wedding, beach time, a tennis tournament (yes, we are in a tennis tournament and no, we can’t play and yes, I have already started trash talking the far better skilled opposition), hikes, wine and a multitude of other probably bad for my health, yet exceptionally fun activities, there will be very little time for posting here.

I did contemplate writing posts ahead of time, but the feeling of overwhelm that swept over me was such that I ran from the house screaming, “Lord release thee from the wretched shackles of thine every growing to-do list!!!” A little dramatic? OK, so that didn’t really happen but I did discard the idea.

Then I had a flash of genius so brilliant Einstein himself would have given me a high 5. My idea is to open the floor to you crazy lot by calling for guest posts. I already know you’re all as brilliant as me and probably a good deal more humble.

Sooo, I’m looking for 9 guest posts in total. The only criteria is that the post subject have something to do with kick arse living, going after dreams or overcoming adversity and ideally be around 500 words long.

If you’re interested, leave me a comment or drop me a line at sami [at symbol] lifelaughsandlemmings [dot] com. Would love to have some different authors enter the fray and mix things up a bit.

Oh, by the way, while I’m on the trip, I plan on ticking a few more dreams off the Daisy List, which I’m excited about (namely #20. Look Into a Volcano and #35. Go to an Outdoor Movie). We’ll see how I go. Maybe I should add #107. Become Grand Champion of a Tennis Tournament.

My goal of blogging world domination is going to its next feeble level. Mwahahahaha! You may have noticed a monthly newsletter, “The Lemming Peal” has been added to the craziness we have going on here at Life, Laughs & Lemmings (in case it isn’t obvious enough; see top right).

It’s no normal newsletter either. It’s exclusive. You heard it right, exclusive. It’s exclusive because only those who sign up for it will receive it. Yep…it’s…exclusive, sort of. ANYWAY, now that we’ve established that it’s exclusive, let me explain a little more…

The newsletter will be somewhat different to my normal posts in that it’ll be based on a monthly experiment. Each month, I will choose something relating to kick arse living. My mission will be to partake in the experiment for the whole month and then report on findings (I chose a month because that’s generally how long it takes to break or form a habit).

In each newsletter, I’ll outline what I plan to do during the coming month and report on the results I found from the previous month (as well as a bunch of tips). Call me your very own kick arse living experimental guinea pig lemming. Oh, and if you’re game, feel free to join in the experiments yourself.

Just so you know, the experiments won’t include injecting myself with a new type of shampoo to see if I turn green. Rather, they’ll be around potential ideas such as;

A month of fun

A month of living mindfully

A month of calm

A month of giving

A month of catching up

A month of romance

A month of etc, etc (that’ll be an interesting month)

I’ll also be throwing in the odd giveaway, product review, exclusive offer (once I find something to actually offer…that’s…exclusive) and who knows what else as it evolves (maybe a free pet lemming).

Now, for those of you who already subscribe to this blog either by RSS or email, if you want to receive the newsletter, you’ll need to sign up for it separately.

Seeing as it is such an exclusive newsletter, you’ll also receive a free copy of a new (and exclusive) ebook I’ve written entitled “Beat Life’s Hum Drum and Have More Fun”. In case you’re wondering, yes, it is a bribe.

Well, what are you waiting for? Subscribe to the bloody newsletter so I can get on with blogging world domination.

PS. I promise I won’t pass on or sell any of my email lists unless I am offered 50 million dollars and a pet lemming.

Recently I’ve been alluding to the fact that there were changes afoot here in the land of lemmings. Well the time has come to let you in on what’s new and what’s yet to come.

Before I get into the changes, let me just say that I realise this post is rather self indulgent and all about me, myself and my blog, but I felt it was important to fill you in because you crazy lot are an amazing community that I love being a part of.

Some of you have become great cyber friends who I one day intend to meet face to face. I value each and every subscriber, comment and link, and given I’m rather excited about this new direction, I wanted you guys to be the first to know.

Actually, you’re not technically the first. I haven’t shut up about it to my partner, Chris and my family. Not to mention Donna, my ever patient blechie (blog techie) who’s been tirelessly implementing the “back end” gobbledy gook that I understand as well as nuclear physics.

Anyway, here’s the deal. As I’ve progressed with this blog, I’ve found it has naturally evolved but you may remember a mini direction crisis I had not so long ago (for those of you who are new here, check out She’ll Be Right Mate for the gory details).

As with any crisis, whilst slightly painful at the time, it led to some soul searching of the purpose, passion and why-am-I-creating-this-blog-anyway kind. Here’s what I have since uncovered;

Conundrum 1: Wishy Washyitis

The issue: While I am a huge advocate of “living well” and many of my posts have been based on that topic, I found I’d lost my writing mojo around the subject. I realized that the term “living well” and what it stands for was a little, shall we say, wishy washy (yes, that’s the technical term) and lacking punch.

The solution: I don’t just want to live well. I want a KICK ARSE life! “Kick arse” is the perfect term for my personality, my current life and my dreams. So, you will notice it used in different areas around the site. Sorry Mum, but I’m afraid it had to be done.

Conundrum 2: Mission Find a Mission

The issue: I didn’t feel the blog had a solid mission that was aligned with what I’m really passionate about, good at and can help others with. Add to that the fact that I’m really not an expert at anything of any note (except maybe Flashdancing) so what the hell can I offer other people? I’m also a rebel at heart, like to stand for something and wanted this blog to be more than just a bunch of stories and more a force of positive change of some sort. Essentially, I wanted to have a mission, and a kick arse one at that!

The solution: I decided to look at my strengths. What am I good at? Well, first off, I can write. OK, so I’m no Ernest Hemingway but I can string a few words together, I enjoy the process and have a knack of writing with humour. I can make people laugh (usually at my own expense but I’m fine with that). I’ve been through a major life crisis, being the D word (new readers, see here for more gory details) and have not just survived, but thrived as a result of it. I’m told, although I’m not totally convinced myself, that I have the ability to inspire and bring people together. So, not a bad start.

Then I looked at what I love; making the most of life, realizing dreams, connecting with people, trying new things, collaboration, being part of something bigger, making a positive difference, giving back and making people laugh (note: these aren’t in any particular order and it’s not an exhaustive list but it’ll give you an idea).

I put my strengths and what I love together and found the intersection. And so was born the new mission; Helping people go from crisis to kick arse. Crisis meaning the pesky, little, day to day troubles right through to the biggies like the D word. And kick arse meaning living like you mean it, having dreams and making them happen and anything else that fits into the category of kick arse. For more detail on this as well as what you can expect to see here, check out the new what this blog’s about page.

Conundrum 3: A Need for Interaction,Collaboration & Giving Back

The issue: One of the awesome surprises I’ve found from blogging is the online community around my blog that crosses over into the communities of other very cool blogs. I love “hanging out” and connecting with other like-minded people. So, I wanted to see more interaction around Life, Laughs & Lemmings, more collaboration with other like-minded bloggers and more abililty to be able to give back to the Life, Laughs & Lemming’s community (and the world in general) through knowledge, help, support, whatever.

The solution: First let me say that overhauling this site is not unlike gutting and rebuilding a department store and then having to show everyone where everything is now located! So in light of that, I’ll be introducing you to the new facets over the coming weeks but here’s the bare bones for now; A new Tell Us Your Story feature in the sidebar, a “Daisy List Bud Club”, Create Your Own Daisy List feature, Reader Rescue posts, a cool “Random Acts of Kick Arse” joint venture involving other bloggers, free downloads and potentially a future Daisy List ecourse (that’s a ways off yet though).

Conundrum 4: A girl’s gotta eat (and buy shoes)

The issue: When Chris and I returned from Canada back home to Australia in October last year, my plan was to finally get cracking on my dream of going into business for myself. I didn’t know what that business was going to look like but I did know it had to be inspiring for me and others, contribute positively to the world and have a “giving back” element to it whilst also provide an income for us. I stumbled across blogging and as I’ve wandered down this path, I’ve come to realise that this is a great platform to begin this dream.

The solution: So over the coming months, you may notice ads going up, reviews being posted and other such income generating practises. A couple of caveats;

In the interests of transparency, I’ll always inform you when I’m making any sort of commission.

When the blog begins generating an income, I will be allocating a percentage of the profits for “random acts of aid” (ie donations).

I won’t be taking a cut of any sort for donations you may happen to give to any causes or charities I post about and link to.

I’m not a fan of heaps of clutter, text link ads and loads of ads so you won’t see that happening. Underhanded marketing tactics like SPAM and not so transparent advertising give me the irrits too so you won’t encounter any of that either.

I’ll only endorse products and services I have tried myself first if possible and/or are reputable, aligned with my values, are excellent quality and value and provide something positive.

Conundrum 5: Move Away From the Laptop Sami!

The issue: It’s become a running joke in our household that it’s necessary to surgically remove the laptop from the end of my arms at the conclusion of each day. That’s not a good thing. As much as this site has become a real passion for me, it’s necessary for me to practise what I preach and live a kick arse life. Besides, I won’t have anything to post on if I spend all my time posting!

The Solution: The Daisy List will be taking more of a front seat. I plan to get out there and tick as many of those suckers off the list as I can. To do that, I won’t be posting quite so often and not so rigidly. I’ll still aim for 3 to 4 posts a week though and on random days. I’m also going to drop the Monday Funny post. Hope everyone is OK with those changes.

So there you have it folks, the “Phase 2″ of Life, Laughs & Lemmings (apologies for the novel-like post). Have a look around and check out the new features.

I really hope you continue on this crazy journey with me and feel free to provide feedback (both constructive and otherwise) in the comments. I’d be interested to see what you all think.

Oh, and a huge shout out to my blechie, Donna! Couldn’t have done it without her. If anyone needs some kick arse tech help, drop me a line and I’ll pass on Donna’s details!
