Laughing kitty

Photo by Zanastardust

So a grasshopper walks into a bar and the bartender says, “Hey! We have a drink named after you!” The grasshopper replies, “Really? You have a drink named Kevin?!”

Funny? No? OK, how about this one…

20 lemmings walk into a bar. Ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch!

Laughing yet? No? Geez, you’re a tough crowd. Righto, one more try…

A dyslexic guy walks into a bra.

Now come on, THAT’S funny! No disrespect to dyslexics of course, they’re teople poo! (OK, so I stole that from a bumper sticker).

You’ve just been subjected to my extensive and incredibly humorous selection of jokes, all of which I stole and all of which I find hilarious, which goes a long way to explaining my ridiculous sense of humour. It also goes some of the way to explaining point number 1 of how to laugh more…

1. Tell a funny joke. As per the above illustrations.

2. Watch or read something funny. Whether it be a movie, TV show, stand up comedian, humorous book or funny email, they’re all designed to entertain and give us a laugh. Nothing cracks me up faster than Borat in a mankini, Will Ferrell in an ad or seeing comedian, Steven Wright live.

3. Hang out with people who make you laugh. Take for instance my sister Shrimp. She has a wicked sense of humour and never fails to provide a laugh. It’s usually at your expense which leads me on to point 4, but first, here’s Shrimp in action;

4. Don’t take life so seriously. Aussies are the Olympic gold medalists at making fun of people (or in Aussie language; give you shit, take the piss or pull your leg). Actually, we make fun of everything, including ourselves. It’s part of our way.

Whilst some could see it as insulting (it’s not meant to be usually), we are very adept at finding the funny side of any situation and experts at pointing out what a “dipstick” you are for falling down the stairs (after first checking you haven’t broken anything of course).

Look for the humour. It’s always there no matter how frustrating the situation is. Oh, and I’m pretty sure the Irish would take the silver medal.

5. Speak in an accent. Seriously, give it a try. Even if your Russian sounds more like Pakistani, it’s still freakin funny. And if you’re with an Aussie, they’ll give you shit for your terrible accent so at the very least you’ll give them a laugh.

There is a time and a place for this though. It’s perhaps not a great idea to order “flied lice” when you’re on a dinner cruise with a large contingent of Japanese eh Mum? By the way, feel free to give the Aussie accent a go. That way we can point and laugh at you.

6. Think of something funny that’s happened to you. That’s the great thing about having fun/funny memories, you get to relive them. You could combine this with number 3 and have a reminiscing dinner party where you recount funny times of old.

7. Spend time with kids or a dog. Kids will find a lettuce leaf funny and dogs always have a smile on their face, except maybe this guy…

We are not amused

We should all aspire to follow their “lead” (pardon the hilarious pun).

8. Bring out your crazy side. Forget what others think, be bold and crack out the crazy! C’mon, I know you have it in you, particularly you Crazy Pants Lance!

Crazy Pants Lance

And yes, I did steal the pic from your blog!

I’m known for my impromptu, out of tune, off key, lyrically questionable singing and my as graceful as a bulldozer Flashdance inspired dance moves (I also do a mean robot). Embrace the crazy!

And if all else fails, you could also try one of those laughter sessions where an instructor leads everyone to do some crazy ass laughing. Personally, I’d rather just watch. That’d be enough to give me the giggles!

What gets you going? What’s your accent of choice? Had something funny happen lately?

    I love laughing and funny things! :) You’ve got some great suggestions here. Here are some things I check out when I need a laugh: http://www.funnyordie.com (look at the Will Ferrell landlady one — so funny!) and http://www.someecards.com. They’re hilarious!!

    Sassy Sami,
    Well…there was that time I wore a dress and lipstick to the elementary school Halloween party…although that was five years ago…and I still haven’t lived that one down! Pictures will NOT be shared! I know where they would end up!! Troublemaker…you are!

    As long as you’re still promoting your Flashdance video, though…it’s all good! In fact, it’s better than good – because laughter is the best medicine of all!

    Hey, I actually liked your jokes…see, now I want to hang out with you…it would be entirely embarrassing…and fun!

    So, you were successful. I leave here today laughing! Way fun (even with that picture!)!!

    “Don’t take life so seriously.” Humor (seriously…) can be a true source of transcendence under adversity.

    As to accents, I remember in my twenties making the discovery that as an American with no particular regional accent I had, uh, an accent.

    I was watching a British comedy and one character was an “American.” In the back of my mind I kept trying to figure out what was odd about him and finally realized it was an Englishman doing a bad American accent!

    Until then I guess I thought Americans without American regional accents spoke “regular” English, lol!

    Hi PP,
    Thanks for the links. I’ll check them out. I’ve seen the landlady Will Ferrell skit – it’s a classic.

    @Lance
    Hey there Crazy Pants Lance,
    Why am I not surprised re the dress and lipstick? You know I’d pay good money to get my hands on that photo! I’d hang out with you any day, especially if you were wearing a dress and lipstick!

    Hi Paul,
    Yep, humour can get you through pretty much anything.

    It’s funny, we have lots of American TV here and we’re so used to the American accent that when you here an Aussie on tele, it sounds totally weird! Thanks for stopping by!

    I love anything with Will Ferrel — he kills me. Reminiscing with my family is usually good for a lot of laughs!

    Sami, I have no doubt that hanging out with you would be a barrel of laughs! : )

    I chuckled enough that the fellow coffee-shoppers turned to look at me!

    I love doing this with a big group of friends – the game of Ha. Basically you all (get as many people as you want to involved) lie on the floor, staggered and with one person lying on another’s stomach, so that you’re all connected. The first person starts with 1 ‘ha’, the second with 2 ‘ha’s', and so forth. Basically it just becomes a giant laugh fest. Diapers recommended!

    Hey K,
    Yeah, Will Ferrell totally cracks me up too.

    Why thank you. Yes, I don’t mind a laugh. I put it down to the fact that I am the progeny of a crazy arse family!

    Hi Veronica,
    If I was in a coffee shop right now I’d have people looking at me too given I just laughed out loud at your Ha idea! That would be too funny. Great suggestion, thanks!

    …the pictures are safely locked up and will NEVER see the light of day!!

    Hanging out…with you…

    hmmm….

    hmmmm….

    Maybe I’d do one of them…

    (what am I saying?????)

    (just forget that thought Sami…)(are you forgetting it????)

    @Lance,
    You know Lance, it’s now impossible to get the vision of you wearing a dress and lipstick out of my head! And I totally think the world is a lesser place for not having those photos out there for all to see. I, for one, know it would make my day to see those pics (I can’t promise they wouldn’t end up on my blog however). ;)

    Great article! I lived in Australia for over two years, and can definitely say the Aussies know how to make light of things – it’s great, and goes well with my Irish humor!! :-)

    @Melanie
    Thanks Melanie. In my travels I’ve always found that the Aussies and the Irish always get on great, mostly because they get up to so much mischief together. And then of course, there’s the mutual love of beer! Thanks for stopping by.

  15. Sami said:

    @Tess
    Hi Tess,
    Yeah, Shrimp is totally hilarious. There are not too many people that can make me laugh as much as she can. And yep, Jannie sure would make a fine number 9!

    Hey Hilary,
    I totally agree, there are some awesome bloggers around and it’s very cool “hanging out” with them.
    My sister is a lot of fun to be around. Her real name is Miranda but all our family call her Shrimp on accounts she was so little (ie shrimpy) when she was born.

    @Manisha
    Hi Manisha, yep, I’m not known for my soft, little giggle, more like a loud, hyena sounding, belly laugh and making others laugh is the best fun and greatest gift.
